Materials in East Flanders

Ghent offers a solid foundation for the production of resources. It focuses on renewable production of new materials, using innovative technologies.

Thanks to the presence of a number of large players, the metal-industry is especially well represented in East Flanders. This enables companies to really focus on several Flemish and European transition priorities, such as the transition to a circular economy and more sustainable production. One of these large players is ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer. Located on the Ghent-Terneuzen canal, it makes maximum use of its strategic location. Raw materials are transshipped from large barges before being processed and transported to the furnaces. The finished steel products are then directly loaded from the plant onto both seafaring and inland ships, or transported by rail or road.

The textile industry also plays a leading role on the global stage, owing to the development of technical and medical textiles. As with the metal industry, this sector is also moving towards a more sustainable future.
